Depression is a highly treatable condition. For treatment to be effective, you need help from an experienced
provider, one who knows which treatments are most effective for which forms of depression.

Depression Medications
A first step is a medical and psychiatric evaluation. A physical exam also may be part of your evaluation
to help determine if an undiagnosed medical problem may be related to your depressive illness.
If your provider prescribes medication, many factors contribute to its effectiveness, such as your weight,
health and metabolism. Medication can take three to six weeks to become fully effective and must be
taken at an adequate dosage level and for a long enough time. That's why it's best to seek help from a
provider experienced in the treatment of depression. If one form of medication doesn't work, your provider
may try another or prescribe a combination of
medications to determine what works best.
Heterocyclics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are most often prescribed for people whose depressions
are characterized by fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and excessive guilt, inability to feel
pleasure, and loss of
appetite with resulting weight loss.
