Muscle relaxants : Description
The muscle relaxants may be divided into only two groups, centrally acting and peripherally acting,
the centrally acting group, which appears to act on the central nervous system, contains 10 drugs
which are chemically different, while only dantrolene has a direct action at the level of the nerve-muscle
connection.
- Flexeril is a muscle relaxant prescribed to relieve muscle spasms resulting from injuries such as sprains, strains, or pulls. Combined with rest and physical therapy, Flexeril provides relief of muscular stiffness and pain.
- Cyclobenzaprine treats pain and stiffness of muscle spasms. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called muscle relaxants. You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to carisoprodol, meprobarnate, or tybamate.
- Skelaxin relaxes certain muscles and relieves pain caused by muscle injuries, sprains, and strains. Belongs to the group of drugs called muscle relaxants.
- Soma treats pain and stiffness of muscle spasms. This medications belongs to a class of medicines called muscle relaxants.
- Zanaflex (Tizanidine) is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Zanaflex is used to treat increased muscle tone associated with spasticity.
